Georgie (Tony) – passed away December 12, 2025

A tribute to our sweet Georgie…..

On May 28, 2018, I met the best guy a girl could ask for. It was pure happenstance, and perfect timing as I just lost my previous GSP, Captain Creature. Another volunteer with NorCal GSP Rescue knew I had a place in my home and heart and that’s when Georgie, a stray from Lincoln, CA, comes to be my foster. Georgie settled in quickly and we adopted each other in July. The best “failure” of my life was to officially welcome him to the family and be my best friend to the end.

He quickly found all the cozy spots in our home (dog beds around every corner), and we developed our “routine”:

  1. Wake up at 5am – we say “We love you. Happy Birthday Georgie”. We didn’t know his birthday since he was a stray, so we just said it every day, so we never missed it.
  2. “Time to make the donuts”. That meant breakfast.
  3. Potty and yard time.
  4. Go back to bed with Dad under the covers. That was called “Bud Cuds”.
  5. Off to work for Mom and Dad and alone time for G.
  6. Dad returns home for the long walkie to smell the flowers. Sunflowers were his favorite. A quick hello to all the neighborhood dogs was always part of the walkie.
  7. Dinner, a movie, get under the covers in bed for belly scratches galore.
  8. Midnight snacks with Dad while Mom is none the wiser.

We miss the routine. It has been the hardest shift for us since he went to heaven. The house is too quiet without all the tap-dancing. His job (they all need one) ended up being my security detail. He once, bravely, scared off a burglar that was trying to enter my house! He was the highlight of the police report! Good boy!

He had many nicknames, G, G-Funky-Joe, Brown Toe, Bug, Bud, Suges, Smorgsgeorge (Smorgs). That last one needs an explanation – he was a champion counter surfer wanting to try everything that wasn’t leafy. George and a smorgasbord=Smorgsgeorge. Out of everything he stole, his favorite food was sushi.

In October of 2025, he jumped off the bed and started a bad limp. I thought it was just a sprain. Long story short, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. The worst news – I said bad words in the vet’s office. We had two more months with him. He went to heaven on a sunny morning with us holding his sweet paws while he sipped on his second favorite nefarious thing…eggnog. December 12, 2025.

I don’t know how I got so lucky to have had this sweet soul, my shadow, my everything, my world. It hurts so terribly to say goodbye, but we are going to rescue again and open our hearts. They need us as much as we need them. Thank you NorCal GSP Rescue for all you do, and especially for letting us take care of our sweet boy.
