German Shorthaired Pointer Temporary Care Program

Unfortunately, this program is currently unavailable - we are inundated with dogs in shelters in danger of euthanasia and have to focus our foster resources on those urgent dogs.

NorCal GSP Rescue is dedicated not only to rehoming GSPs in need but also to reuniting GSPs and their families after a crisis.

Temporary Care Program for German Shorthaired Pointers (GSPs) in Northern California: We offer temporary care (up to 90 days) for GSPs whose guardians are facing the decision to surrender their GSP because of a short-term crisis, such as illness/hospitalization, family illness, emergency evacuation orders, house fire, eviction, homelessness, domestic violence, economic hardship, or other situations. This allows the time and support needed for those affected to secure a better outcome.

A crisis shouldn’t mean you have to give up your GSP.

If you are struggling with a crisis situation and have no other options, NorCal GSP Rescue offers a Temporary Care Program for people or families in need of a temporary home for their GSP. The purpose of this program is to provide care for GSPs during a crisis and then reunite GSPs with their families following the crisis. The program offers up to 90 days of care. Medical Requirements

Required: Rabies vaccination, Distemper/Parvo (DA2PPv) vaccination, Bordetella vaccination, proof of spay/neuter, microchipped, on heartworm preventative.
Recommended: leptospirosis and canine influenza vaccinations.

In cases where your GSP may be missing vaccinations or a microchip, we can assist. GSPs that are a part of our Temporary Care Program must be spayed/neutered either before entering the program or while they are in the program (we will also assist with this). If you do not wish to spay/neuter your GSP and do not have a valid medical reason, we are unfortunately unable to assist you. Read more about the importance of spay and neuter.

Program Fees

This is not a free program. The cost of having your GSP in our Temporary Care Program will be determined prior to your GSP arriving. A NorCal GSP Rescue team member will discuss this with you based on your situation. Costs for the Program can be paid weekly/monthly. Owners are responsible for reimbursing costs for spaying/neutering, microchip, and/or any vaccinations or necessary veterinary care that NorCal GSP Rescue provides. 

Communication

NorCal GSP Rescue uses email as a primary source of contact. Please be sure to routinely check your email for our response, including any questions we may have about your Temporary Care Program application.

If a team member of NorCal GSP Rescue contacts you, and you do not respond within 72 hours, your spot will be given to the next person on our waiting list. We will do our best to assist you as quickly as possible. If we are not able to assist right away, we can place your GSP on the waiting list.

Our service area is Northern California. Your GSP will need to be brought to the agreed-upon meeting location, and we may be able to assist with transportation. There may be a waitlist for our Temporary Care Program. If you have more than one GSP, we may not be able to help with all of your GSPs at one time or place them in the same foster home.
