Whidbey

Meet Whidbey — A Loving, Kid-Friendly Canine Companion Looking for Her Next Chapter!

Location: Berkeley, CA

Rehoming Fee: $300 (donated to rescue)

Whidbey is an 8½-year-old, AKC-registered female German Shorthaired Pointer with a heart of gold and a lifetime of love to give. At about 60 pounds, she’s the perfect size for snuggles, strolls, and family life. This gentle, people-loving girl has been cherished since puppyhood, and her family is now hoping to find her a wonderful new home where she can thrive with the time, space, and attention she deserves.

With three children under five and life now rooted in the city, her current family simply can’t match the daily enrichment and outdoor time a GSP truly needs. Whidbey has been incredible with their kids — patient, gentle, and truly wonderful — so this decision comes from a place of love and wanting the absolute best for her. They’re seeking a family-oriented home (preferably not in a small apartment or dense urban setting) and are partnering with rescue support rather than placing her in a shelter.

⭐ What Makes Whidbey Special

Fantastic with children — from babies on up. She’s patient, loving, and respectful.
Dog-friendly — great with dogs of all sizes, male or female.
People-friendly — she warmly greets strangers and loves being part of family life.
House-trained and knows her basic cues.
Steady, friendly, and sweet-natured — she fits beautifully into a family environment.
Loves having a yard and does well relaxing indoors or outdoors for a few hours at a time.
Low drama, high affection — she’s not an escape artist, not destructive except for the occasional paper chewing if left too long, and she genuinely wants to please.

🩺 Health & Care

Whidbey is spayed, microchipped, up-to-date on vaccines, and comes with full vet records. She does have Addison’s disease, which is well-managed with one monthly injection her family currently gives at home. The medication runs about $100/month when administered at home; having a vet give the injection is an option but more costly. She’s also on heartworm preventative.

Her condition is stable and very manageable — and she’s been living a full, happy life with it.

🏡 Her Ideal Home

Whidbey would flourish with a family or adopter who:
• Has older kids, teens, or children of any age who love dogs
• Has another friendly dog, or enjoys canine social time
• Lives in a home with a yard or more space than a small apartment
• Enjoys having a sweet companion to join them in daily activities
• Can offer companionship and structure, especially since she does best when not left alone for long stretches

While wonderful with dogs and kids, she’s not the best match for a home with cats, as she loves to chase the neighborhood felines.

💖 The Bottom Line

Whidbey is an affectionate, loyal, family-oriented girl who has spent her whole life being loved — and giving that love right back. She’s gentle, steady, great with children, and blends beautifully with other dogs. She’s ready to be someone’s devoted companion and would make a fantastic match for a home with space, affection, and time to share.
